Identity Cabaret

Identity Cabaret is a new creative project for home-educated young people aged 11+ from across County Durham, based at Redhills Durham Miners’ Hall.

Led by Redhills Writer in Residence Andy Willoughby and experienced drama practitioner Gemma Kell, the workshops will offer a welcoming space for young people to explore identity, family stories and County Durham’s heritage through creative writing, drama, performance poetry, music and movement.

Young people will be encouraged to work in the ways that best suit their interests, abilities and confidence. They might write a poem or song, devise a short scene, mime or sketch, try improvisation, explore storytelling, or interview an older family member about their experiences. No previous writing, drama or performance experience is needed.

The project is designed to help young people develop confidence, resilience and self-expression while meeting others and becoming part of a supportive creative group. Their individual voices and experiences will shape the work throughout.

The workshops will lead towards Identity Cabaret, a public sharing at Redhills for families, friends and a wider audience. Taking part in the final performance will be encouraged, but each young person’s needs and preferred ways of contributing will be respected throughout the project.

The sessions will be held on Wednesday afternoons 1-3pm at Redhills from 4th November culminating in a live performance on the evening of Wed 9th December.
