Redhills Sundays

Join us every Sunday from 11am–2pm for a warm welcome at Redhills.
Explore Durham’s historic Miners’ Hall, discover our latest exhibitions, enjoy family-friendly creative activities, and relax with drinks, snacks and seasonal lunch offers from our café. Children can uncover the stories of Redhills with our explorer backpacks, while everyone can enjoy volunteer-led talks and short film screenings throughout the day.
Entry is free, with a pay-what-you-feel donation.
Visitors can also stay throughout the afternoon for a programme of ticketed events, including our popular guided tours of Redhills, inspiring talks, brass band concerts, folk and contemporary music performances, film screenings and special events celebrating the culture, heritage and creativity of the Durham Coalfield.
This weeks programme includes:
12.30pm – Tommy Ramsay: Talking about Tommy
Join Redhills volunteer and Tommy Ramsay expert Dr Sandra Bell for a short talk about the remarkable life of Thomas (Tommy) Ramsay.
Tommy was a veteran of the 1844 miners’ strike, during which miners and their families were evicted from their colliery-owned homes. A fervent believer in the importance of miners’ unity, Tommy travelled through the pit villages and towns of County Durham with his crake, encouraging miners to come together for organised meetings. His call for unity has echoed down the generations, with many Durham mining banners carrying the motto ‘Unity is Strength’. Tommy is honoured at Redhills in the form of a large portrait.
Sandra’s newly published book about Tommy will be available to purchase from the Redhills Shop.
2.00pm – Fossil Fury: The brand new interactive family theatre show from ATOMS Education CIC.
A family show, fresh from its successful debut at Durham Fringe Festival – with added extras just for your kids.
Doors open from 2pm for drop in family dinosaur and fossil related creative activities in the Banner Room. At 3.30pm join us in the iconic Pitmans Parliament for the main show.
A prehistoric school visit like no other.
Expect the unexpected and raucous roarsome fun.
It’s silly, interactive, fantastically dinotastic and surprisingly educational.
After the show finishes the cast will be be coming down to the Banner Room to meet your kids including the non-human member, Hatchley.
