SUMMARY:Mark Thomas: 40 in Stand-Up Years
DESCRIPTION:Phil McIntyre Live Ltd by arrangement with Tin Cat Entertainment proudly presents: \n  \nMark Thomas\n40 in Stand-Up Years\n  \nWhat?! Mark Thomas has been ‘standing up’ for 40 years? Impossible!! But how old does that make you…? Alas it is true; one of our oldest surviving alternative comics celebrates 40 years at the mic. \n  \nSo\, here’s what he has done so far in numbers; performed comedy for 40 years\, won 8 awards for performing\, 4 for human rights work and 1 he invented for himself\, made 6 series of the Mark Thomas Comedy Product (Channel 4)\, written 6 books and 5 play scripts\, made 5 series of the Manifesto for Radio 4\, made 3 Dispatches for Channel 4\, sued the police (and won) 3 times\, curated and authored 2 art exhibitions with artist Tracey Moberly and had 1 Guinness World Record for holding 20 protests in 24 hours. \n  \nIf that’s not enough\, he’s also walked 724km around the length of the Israel Wall in the West Bank\, been credited with changing the law on tax avoidance\, started a comedy club in Palestine with Dr Sam Beale and campaigned successfully for things like trade union recognition for cinema workers and getting multinationals to change their practices. You’re right\, there’s more\, but your attention is running out and we’re running out of space. So let’s just say he’s generally mucked about trying to have fun and upset the right people…which he is really\, really good at. \n  \nSo basically expect a taster menu of government and personal mayhem\, jokes\, rants and a personal state of the nation broadcast as he tries to turn ‘what the f*ck is going on’ into a cogent hour of stand-up. \n  \n★★★★★ “Once again shooting laughter-laden political bullets from the lip” \nTHE RECS \n  \n★★★★★ “Mark Thomas is a firebrand of a clown. The energy he brings to the room is infectious…very\, very funny” \nCLOWNSTER \n  \n★★★★ “The strong ratio of hard-hitting matter to gag-rich mirth is a feat that makes other stand-up look idling and irrelevant” \nTHE TELEGRAPH \n  \nThis event is a fundraiser for the Durham Miners Gala. All proceeds will support the world’s biggest celebration of working class culture.

SUMMARY:Durham Folk Festival
DESCRIPTION:Welcome to Durham Folk Festival!\nFirst\, a little introduction. If you weren’t aware of Durham Folk Festival till now\, that’s not surprising! Till very recently they were Hartlepool Folk Festival. \nFounded in 2015\, for ten years HFF was the home of magical happenings\, unforgettable experiences and the very finest in folk music. Unfortunately\, 2025 saw the closure of the Borough Hall\, their mainstage venue\, which put the future of the festival at risk. With real regret\, they concluded that the only way forward was to explore alternative locations. \nFestival Organiser Joanie Crump said\, “Sad as we are to leave Hartlepool\, we’re delighted to have found a new home – and what a home! From medieval architecture to cobblestone streets\, Durham transports you back in time. Whether it’s the Land of the Prince Bishops or the beating heart of the Durham coalfield\, there is so much to discover. Join us as we reveal all that this sublime location has to offer\, with its two UNESCO World Heritage Sites\, spectacular settings and boundless charm. And\, of course\, the first-class events\, fabulous music and warm welcome you came to expect at Hartlepool!” \nFor further information about Durham Folk Festival\, click here. \nFor Weekend Tickets\, click here.

SUMMARY:Voices from the Lough: Lí Ban; Barry Kerr
DESCRIPTION:One concert\, 2 perspectives\, a singular heritage. Voices from the Lough is a celebration of Lough Neagh and the Bann in the ancient province of Ulster by the world-class musicians it has produced. \nFirst up is Barry Kerr\, a multi-instrumentalist and singer whose music expresses the very heart of Irish life. Originally from the southern shores of Lough Neagh\, his music is deeply rooted in place — shaped by the lough\, the communities that raised him\, and the stories he feels compelled to pass on. Barry holds the current title of Folk Album of the Year for Curlew’s Cry. \nNext up is Lí Ban. Winner of both RTE and BBC Radio’s Folk Singer of the Year title\, Ríoghnach Connolly collaborates here with family – aunts\, uncles and cousins – to interpret and share the traditions of Lough Neagh. The ties that bind tradition and people are writ large\, as this Armagh clan serve up a repertoire seldom heard outside its own locale. This extends to the instrumentation\, which includes the rare\, wire-strung Downhill Harp. \nThis is a chance to experience music steeped in regional heritage\, forged where generations fished the waters\, built boats and composed songs that were woven into a once-vibrant tradition. \nClick Here for Tickets

SUMMARY:Banter; Jez Lowe; Sam Carter sings Nic Jones
DESCRIPTION:Banter are four fine musicians rooted firmly in traditional English music\, but who enjoy testing the limits: Simon Care on melodeon & concertina\, Nina Zella on keyboards & vocals\, Tim Walker on drums\, percussion\, brass\, guitar\, bass & vocals and Mark Jolley on bass\, fiddle\, guitar & vocals. \nAlthough just four people\, they create a huge sound and have been described as ‘the world’s smallest big band’. \nWe couldn’t possibly have our first festival in our new home without County Durham’s most beloved folk singer. Over the past four decades\, Jez Lowe has been one of the UK’s best –-and busiest – singer-songwriters. His songs often contain powerful social commentary\, wrapped up in lyrical brilliance and with more than a smattering of North East humour. Those who have recorded Jez’s songs include Fairport Convention\, The Dubliners\, The Unthanks\, The Young Uns\, Bob Fox\, Liam Clancy\, The Black Family and many more. \nSam Carter creates a loving tribute to one of the genre’s most influential artists. Nic Jones’ innovative\, groundbreaking guitar style and profoundly emotive singing have inspired generations of folk musicians\, and his seminal album\, Penguin Eggs\, remains a treasured masterpiece over four decades later. \nHailed by fellow folk artist Jon Boden as “the finest English-style fingerpicking guitarist of his generation\,” Sam is uniquely positioned to interpret this revered repertoire. This performance presents a rare opportunity to experience Nic Jones’ timeless songs\, brought to life on stage by a master of the folk tradition. \nClick Here for Tickets

SUMMARY:Windborne; Angeline Morrison
DESCRIPTION:Joining us from New England in the USA\, Windborne’s music has deep roots in traditions of vocal harmony. Lauren Breunig\, Jeremy Carter-Gordon\, Lynn Rowan\, and Will Rowan share a vibrant energy onstage with a blending of voices that can only come from decades of vocal collaboration. But there’s another\, crucial dimension to Windborne that roots their artistry. They are advocates of folk music’s long alliance with social activism\, Labour and civil rights. Their latest project\, Of Hard Times & Harmony\, explores themes of social consciousness\, as well as delivering moments of true hilarity and wit. \n  \nBBC Radio Scotland’s Travelling Folk describes Windborne as “subverting expectations and redefining the genre… absolutely phenomenal!” \n  \nRecently hailed as one of MOJO’s ‘voices taking folk into the future’\, Angeline Morrison is a singer\, multi-instrumentalist and songwriter whose work combines a deep love of traditional song\, a deep respect for the hidden ancestral voices of Old Albion\, and explorations of diaspora\, nation and history. Angeline has played the acoustic stage at Glastonbury and appeared on BBC2’s Later With Jools Holland. In May 2022\, her album The Brown Girl and Other Folk Songs was voted The Guardian’s Folk Album of the Month. The Sorrow Songs: Folk Songs of Black British Experience traces the historic Black presence in Britain which dates back to at least Roman times\, yet is often hidden\, forgotten or unacknowledged. In December 2022 The Sorrow Songs was voted No 1 Folk album of the year in The Guardian. \nClick Here for Tickets

SUMMARY:NE Street Band
DESCRIPTION:In 1985 after his St James Park gigs Bruce Springsteen personally donated $20’000 to the Durham Miners Support Group\, which at the time was a great sum of money & helped many families going through hardship. A wonderful gesture by Springsteen & something still remembered fondly ever since\, especially here in Co Durham with a lot of people getting into his music because of his gesture. \nSo when we were approached by local Springsteen tribute ‘The NE Street Band’ we thought this would be a perfect fit here in our iconic space for a night of music by ‘The Boss’ \nSo\, we are therefore thrilled to welcome to Redhills\, for a night of all things Springsteen AND much more the fantastic ‘NE STREET BAND’ \nThe band regularly perform around the country & have played at some amazing venues & continue to grow from strength to strength with an ever growing fan base \nThis gig sees the band’s SEVEN piece line up performing their ‘Acoustic Sessions’ show which includes many of Springsteen’s big hits and iconic album tracks as well as a number of songs from the ‘We Shall Overcome’ Seeger Sessions albums which include the aforementioned title track & other old folk tunes back all reworked for a 7 piece acoustic band. \nThe band’s ‘Acoustic Sessions’ gigs are something a little different to their full bigger venue rock shows as the band swap their electric guitars for acoustic guitars\, accordions\, fiddles\, flutes as well as piano\, saxophone with their amazing harmonies too… \nAn engaging & high energy show which we are very much looking forward to seeing \nBacked by a full professional PA and lighting this is must for all Springsteen fans but also for fans of Americana\, country & folk music. \nCheck out these reviews taken from venues & FB pages \n👇🏼 \n“This band just HAS to be seen and most definitely HEARD!” \n“One of the tightest bands I’ve ever seen” \n“Amazing diverse musicianship & superb front man” \n“This band never play things safe with their set list\, absolutely brilliantly different “ \n“This band just keeps on getting better & better\, brilliant setlist “ \n“Bruce himself would be proud” \n“Go & see these guys (and Louise who is outrageously talented) you’ll feel better when you left than when you arrived\, that’s guaranteed “ \n“One of the best bands ever to play at our venue “ \n“Energy by the Truckload“ \n“Superb Band” \n“Best Springsteen band I’ve ever seen” \nCheck out a recent ‘unplugged’ live track & a live performance too \n \n \nCheck the band out on all Social Media platforms as well their website \nwww.NESB.co.uk

SUMMARY:Taj Ali: Come What May\, We’re Here to Stay
DESCRIPTION:Journalist and historian Taj Ali joins us at Redhills to discuss his new book\, Come What May\, We’re Here to Stay: The Story of South Asian Resistance in Britain\, a history of generations who fought racism\, exploitation and injustice – and helped shape modern Britain. \nFrom anti-imperial activism and seafarers’ strikes to workplace struggles\, Asian youth movements and anti-racist organising\, Taj uncovers a radical history too often left out of the national story. He explores how South Asian activists built working-class solidarity across racial and religious divides\, and what those struggles can teach us about resisting division today. \nAt Redhills\, in the magnificent Grade II*-listed Pitmans Parliament – the historic home of the Durham miners – Taj will focus on the remarkable solidarity between South Asian communities and striking miners during 1984–85. South Asian activists raised money and food\, travelled to picket lines and built relationships through shared struggle. What can those experiences teach us about building working-class unity today? \nTaj Ali is a former editor of Tribune. He contributes to The Guardian and Al Jazeera English and regularly appears as a commentator on the BBC. In 2025 he founded Anti-Racist Radar and was a finalist for the 2026 Orwell Prize. \nCome What May\, We’re Here to Stay is published by Manchester University Press in September 2026. \nProduced with People’s Bookshop and Joseph Rowntree Foundation as part of Redhills Sundays. \nTickets are free\, but must be reserved. You can also purchase a ‘Ticket and Book’ for the RRP of the book. Taj will be available to sign copies of his book following the event.
