DESCRIPTION:What skills do community leaders need now? \nThis is the question we’ll be exploring together. \nVillages\, town and cities in the North East are going through social upheaval that is being propelled by loss. Locally\, people are watching the things they used to rely on slide away: industry\, jobs\, identity\, secure housing\, and civic pride. Nationally\, we’ve lost trust in our politicians\, the cost of living has soared and our waterways are polluted. Globally\, people are losing their lives and livelihoods to conflict and climate change. \nYou might even say we’re facing an apocalypse… \nWe tend to associate the word apocalypse with ‘ending’ but it actually means ‘revelation’  and so we’d like you to imagine with us about what a ‘good apocalypse’ in the North East might look like: What is being revealed to us right now? How might we use this moment to steer our communities towards a positive future? And what new tools do we need in our toolkit to do so? \nJoin us to think about what how we might: \n\nStop ourselves from burning out\nBridge divides in our community\nHelp people feel like they belong\nFace our losses together\nTell the kind of stories that inspire hope and action\n\nThis is an opportunity to think about what support you need as a community leader to face the challenges ahead. DESCRIPTION:Durham Free Fringe aims to offer performance spots to all who apply\, which has been made possible by the addition of two venues. Redhills Durham Miners Hall will be the hub for the many spoken word acts taking part. Meanwhile\, The Market Tavern joins The Holy GrAle as a second pub-based venue\, and these spaces will host the majority of music events. The Holy GrAle and Market Tavern will begin hosting events on Wednesday 29th and Thursday 30th July\, Redhills will then run from Friday 31st July to Sunday 2nd August. The Sunday will also feature a music finale at the Holy GrAle. \nHere’s the line up for Redhills on 31st July: \nLiam Overend: Do Poets get Encores?\nIf you haven’t done so already\, forget the poems they taught you at school; you’ll find none of that here. Instead\, let Liam share with you his heart-warming anecdotes and poetry inspired by real life events (mainly his)\, from changing nappies\, fighting with a cactus\, being terrorised by peacocks and a brief bout of Bell’s Palsy. 3.15 p.m. (40 min) \n  \nLuke Caley: Spiritual Traveller in the ghetto\nA performance about educating people on the importance of helping the elderly and the most vulnerable in the ghetto while creating a peace movement worldview and creating a humanistic mind heart and soul to create alignment and safety in the ghetto through self awareness self knowledge and helping charities. 4.00 p.m. (30 min) \n  \nStories from the Streets: Brogan Brannan\nBorn in Somerset\, raised in Scotland\, sullying the north east for the past 6 years\, Brogan is a spoken word poet and performer with salty rants\, structured rhymes and no reservations. Her work often illuminates how deeply personal experiences are often universally felt and she doesn’t shy away from the grisly details. Grab her anytime she’s not on stage to buy a QR code to download her audio album and take some pieces of her home! 5.20 p.m. (30 mins) \n  \nStories from the Streets: Dan Husband\n‘Stories from the Streets’ strays away from the one hour show to be broken down across a weekend\, whilst allowing other spoken word talent and opportunity to showcase their style alongside me! Think less all my ramblings\, think more ‘Husband Material presents:’ D.L. ‘Dan’ Husband is a North East England born & bred writer\, poet and performer. With two collections (HMVI & HMV II) published alongside a score of individual pieces in various publications\, he pens poetry and prose with acid in the inkwell & compassion in the heart. Unflinching writing and performances at various venues and Fringe festivals discussing addiction\, homelessness\, life\, love\, growth and all that lies in between. I’m OK is a series of photographs and words from North East photographer and storyteller\, Richard Eyers and the people that he meets. The words are their own; what they have chosen to share. They are unedited. Each portrait is inspired by conversation and the words that have been shared. Exhibition in the Miners’ Hall cinema room\, with talks at points through the day. From 3.00 p.m. \n  \nErasmus Croc’s and Aaron Wright’s Guide To Life\nErasmus Croc is the world’s first poetry crocodile\, performing alongside his young protégé\, Aaron Wright. Trigger warnings: grief\, death and Tesco. 7.15 p.m. \n  \nMwelwa Chilekwa: ReSIStance\nWomen are the villains and society is the judge\, jury and executioner. Our heads lay bare on the guillotine and with one false move… But this show changes our story and empowers others. A passionate and emotive one-woman show featuring poetry to SMASH the patriarchy. From light-hearted topics like school life and dating to the more darker aspects: abuse and sexual assault. Trigger warning for those topics\, this is how the world is. Experiences far too many women and girls\, myself included\, face. Why? Together\, no matter your gender\, we are going to put the sis in resistance! 8.20 p.m. (60 min)

Alas it is true; one of our oldest surviving alternative comics celebrates 40 years at the mic. \n  \nSo\, here’s what he has done so far in numbers; performed comedy for 40 years\, won 8 awards for performing\, 4 for human rights work and 1 he invented for himself\, made 6 series of the Mark Thomas Comedy Product (Channel 4)\, written 6 books and 5 play scripts\, made 5 series of the Manifesto for Radio 4\, made 3 Dispatches for Channel 4\, sued the police (and won) 3 times\, curated and authored 2 art exhibitions with artist Tracey Moberly and had 1 Guinness World Record for holding 20 protests in 24 hours. \n  \nIf that’s not enough\, he’s also walked 724km around the length of the Israel Wall in the West Bank\, been credited with changing the law on tax avoidance\, started a comedy club in Palestine with Dr Sam Beale and campaigned successfully for things like trade union recognition for cinema workers and getting multinationals to change their practices. Till very recently they were Hartlepool Folk Festival. \nFounded in 2015\, for ten years HFF was the home of magical happenings\, unforgettable experiences and the very finest in folk music. Unfortunately\, 2025 saw the closure of the Borough Hall\, their mainstage venue\, which put the future of the festival at risk. With real regret\, they concluded that the only way forward was to explore alternative locations. \nFestival Organiser Joanie Crump said\, “Sad as we are to leave Hartlepool\, we’re delighted to have found a new home – and what a home! Fiddler Sam Sweeney was the 2015 BBC Folk Awards Musician of the Year\, and is known for his work in Bellowhead\, The Full English and his own Made In The Great War project. Melodeon genius Andy Cutting\, a three-time BBC Folk Awards Best Musician\, is a compelling solo performer and currently works with Blowzabella\, Topette\, June Tabor\, and Roger Daltry. Concertina wizard Rob Harbron is known for his work with The Full English (Best Group and Best Album BBC Folk Awards 2014)\, Fay Hield and Jon Boden. \n“Three of England’s finest traditional players weaving exquisite tapestries out of old and new tunes. Belinda O’Hooley\, a renowned pianist\, singer and composer\, is best known as one half of O’Hooley & Tidow\, who rose to international prominence for writing and performing the theme to the hit TV series Gentleman Jack. Belinda is also known for accompanying folk luminaries including Rufus Wainwright and Nic Jones. \n  \nThe Tom McConville Band\n Fronted by the incendiary fiddle playing of BBC Radio 2 Musician of the Year Tom McConville\, whom Seth Lakeman regards as his biggest influence\, and whose exceptional voice is brought to the fore with big choruses and a great choice of songs and tunes. The band also features Shona Kipling\, one of the finest accordion players in the country. SUMMARY:High Spen Blue Diamonds: A Century of Rapper.
DESCRIPTION:Join us in the Pitman’s Parliament to celebrate the centenary of the High Spen Blue Diamonds rapper team. \nA tradition unique to the pit villages of County Durham and Northumberland\, rapper dancing was first performed by miners in the 19th century and is more popular than ever\, with rapper teams found all over England and in countries across the world. \nPhil Heaton\, author of Rapper: The Miners’ Sword Dance of North-East England\, will be in conversation with Ricky Forster\, grandson of the team’s founder Fred Forster\, where they will discuss the history of the team\, the Spen dance\, the legacy of the Forster family (from the 1800s to present-day generations) and everything in between.
