SUMMARY:We Are The Lions\, Mr. Manager!
DESCRIPTION:Townsend Theatre Productions presents\n\n\n\nWE ARE THE LIONS\, MR MANAGER!\n– the story of Jayaben Desai and the Grunwick Strike\n\nWritten by Neil Gore      Directed by Louise Townsend\n\nIn 1976\, six workers walked out of Grunwick Film Processing Laboratory and Factory in Willesden. They staged a strike against their poor working conditions\, demanding the right to join a union.\n\nLess than two years later\, those six had been joined by 20\,000 supporters in an historic dispute fighting for better rights for poorly treated workers. Predominantly Asian women\, these strikers shattered stereotypes\, challenged the establishment\, brought a community together to support the rights of workers and changed the face of trade unionism.\n\nOn the 50th anniversary of the start of the Grunwick Strike\, Townsend Theatre Productions celebrates their bravery\, bringing their inspirational story to a new generation with “We Are The Lions\, Mr Manager!”\, an imaginative and stylish production with songs and music of the time accompanied by an integrated exhibition.\n\nThis performance will be creatively captioned. Creative captions offer an opportunity for deaf and hard of hearing audiences to more fully immerse themselves as captions are designed to complement the set and the performance.\n\n\nTownsend Productions: ‘…a company making a name for delivering vivid\, politically committed theatre’ – The Observer. \n\n\nTownsend Productions previous tours: \nThe Ragged Trousered Philanthropists (**** ‘Tremendous’ – The Times)\, \nWe Will Be Free! (Show to see! – The Stage)\, \nUnited We Stand (**** ‘Excellent’ – The Observer)\, \nDare Devil Rides To Jarama (***** ‘Outstanding’ – London Theatre1) \n\nTicket Pricing \nAt Redhills\, we want everyone to feel welcome — whatever their financial situation. That’s why most of our events use a flexible pricing system. \nFor these events\, you can choose from three ticket options: \n\nOpen Concession – If money’s tight\, choose this rate. No questions asked — we’re just glad you’re here.\nStandard – If you’re able\, we encourage you to choose this option. It helps support Redhills and the independent artists and companies we work with.\nSolidarity Price – If you can give a little more\, please consider this option. Each Solidarity ticket helps subsidise two Open Concession tickets\, opening the doors for more people to enjoy what Redhills has to offer.\n\nSimply pick the ticket that suits your budget and continue to checkout.

SUMMARY:Who was William Cuthbert Blackett?
DESCRIPTION:Image credit: The North of England Institute of Mining and Mechanical Engineers \n\n\n\nWilliam Cuthbert Blackett dominated the life of Sacriston in the early 20th century. Who was he?\n\n\n\nBlackett was Managing Director of the Charlaw and Sacriston Colliery Co. Ltd. But he was much more than this. An innovator in mining engineering and mines rescue\, a soldier\, a prominent supporter of local causes\, he was often at odds with his workers but retained their respect. Above all\, Blackett was a highly courageous man who on several occasions risked his own life to rescue miners trapped underground and was awarded medals for his bravery. This lecture will tell the story of a local hero. And\, have you ever wondered why the road marked Acorn Close Lane on Google Maps is known locally as Blackett’s Bank? This lecture will tell you why. \n\n\n\nJohn Tomaney is a Pro-Provost and Professor of Urban and Regional Planning at University College London and chair of the Trustees at Redhills. He has strong family connections with Sacriston and has been  researching its history for several years. This lecture follows one he gave last year when he sketched the early history of the village. \n\n\n\nThis event is sponsored by Redhills – the Durham Miners’ Hall and University College London. A bar will be open.Free light refreshments will be available. \n\n\n\nDuration: 1 hr 30 min
