SUMMARY:Easington & Eppleton Colliery Disasters: 75th Anniversary Memorial
DESCRIPTION:Join us at Redhills Durham Miners Hall on Friday 29 May for a special act of remembrance marking the 75th anniversary of the Easington and Eppleton Colliery disasters. \nIn 1951\, County Durham was shaken by two devastating mining disasters within weeks of each other. On 29 May\, an underground explosion at Easington Colliery claimed the lives of 83 miners and rescue workers\, leaving families and communities across the East Durham coalfield grieving. On 6 July\, a further explosion at Eppleton Colliery\, near Hetton-le-Hole\, took the lives of nine miners. \nTogether\, these tragedies left a deep and lasting mark on the Durham coalfield. They remain among the most painful chapters in the region’s industrial history\, remembered by many as part of the “Year of Tragedy”. \nThe memorial will take place at Redhills from 11.30am\, with the act of remembrance beginning at 11.45am in the Redhills Memorial Garden. The ceremony will include speeches\, prayers\, a roll call of the dead\, and a performance of Gresford – The Miners’ Hymn. \nRefreshments will follow in the new Banner Room at Redhills. \nThe memorial will be led by Revd Colin Jackson of Easington and Revd Jenny Portapryde of Eppleton. \nAll are welcome to attend. \nAs we mark 75 years since these disasters\, we come together to honour those who died\, recognise the sacrifice of mining families\, and ensure that the memory of these communities continues to live on. \nNo ticket or RSVP required.

DESCRIPTION:What skills do community leaders need now? \nThis is the question we’ll be exploring together. \nVillages\, town and cities in the North East are going through social upheaval that is being propelled by loss. Locally\, people are watching the things they used to rely on slide away: industry\, jobs\, identity\, secure housing\, and civic pride. Nationally\, we’ve lost trust in our politicians\, the cost of living has soared and our waterways are polluted. Globally\, people are losing their lives and livelihoods to conflict and climate change. \nYou might even say we’re facing an apocalypse… \nWe tend to associate the word apocalypse with ‘ending’ but it actually means ‘revelation’  and so we’d like you to imagine with us about what a ‘good apocalypse’ in the North East might look like: What is being revealed to us right now? How might we use this moment to steer our communities towards a positive future? And what new tools do we need in our toolkit to do so? \nJoin us to think about what how we might: \n\nStop ourselves from burning out\nBridge divides in our community\nHelp people feel like they belong\nFace our losses together\nTell the kind of stories that inspire hope and action\n\nThis is an opportunity to think about what support you need as a community leader to face the challenges ahead. SUMMARY:Taj Ali: Come What May\, We’re Here to Stay
DESCRIPTION:Journalist and historian Taj Ali joins us at Redhills to discuss his new book\, Come What May\, We’re Here to Stay: The Story of South Asian Resistance in Britain\, a history of generations who fought racism\, exploitation and injustice – and helped shape modern Britain. \nFrom anti-imperial activism and seafarers’ strikes to workplace struggles\, Asian youth movements and anti-racist organising\, Taj uncovers a radical history too often left out of the national story. He explores how South Asian activists built working-class solidarity across racial and religious divides\, and what those struggles can teach us about resisting division today. \nAt Redhills\, in the magnificent Grade II*-listed Pitmans Parliament – the historic home of the Durham miners – Taj will focus on the remarkable solidarity between South Asian communities and striking miners during 1984–85. South Asian activists raised money and food\, travelled to picket lines and built relationships through shared struggle. What can those experiences teach us about building working-class unity today? \nTaj Ali is a former editor of Tribune. He contributes to The Guardian and Al Jazeera English and regularly appears as a commentator on the BBC. In 2025 he founded Anti-Racist Radar and was a finalist for the 2026 Orwell Prize. \nCome What May\, We’re Here to Stay is published by Manchester University Press in September 2026. \nProduced with People’s Bookshop and Joseph Rowntree Foundation as part of Redhills Sundays. \nTickets are free\, but must be reserved.
