SUMMARY:Easington & Eppleton Colliery Disasters: 75th Anniversary Memorial
DESCRIPTION:Join us at Redhills Durham Miners Hall on Friday 29 May for a special act of remembrance marking the 75th anniversary of the Easington and Eppleton Colliery disasters. \nIn 1951\, County Durham was shaken by two devastating mining disasters within weeks of each other. On 29 May\, an underground explosion at Easington Colliery claimed the lives of 83 miners and rescue workers\, leaving families and communities across the East Durham coalfield grieving. On 6 July\, a further explosion at Eppleton Colliery\, near Hetton-le-Hole\, took the lives of nine miners. \nTogether\, these tragedies left a deep and lasting mark on the Durham coalfield. They remain among the most painful chapters in the region’s industrial history\, remembered by many as part of the “Year of Tragedy”. \nThe memorial will take place at Redhills from 11.30am\, with the act of remembrance beginning at 11.45am in the Redhills Memorial Garden. The ceremony will include speeches\, prayers\, a roll call of the dead\, and a performance of Gresford – The Miners’ Hymn. \nRefreshments will follow in the new Banner Room at Redhills. \nThe memorial will be led by Revd Colin Jackson of Easington and Revd Jenny Portapryde of Eppleton. \nAll are welcome to attend. \nAs we mark 75 years since these disasters\, we come together to honour those who died\, recognise the sacrifice of mining families\, and ensure that the memory of these communities continues to live on. \nNo ticket or RSVP required.

SUMMARY:Who was William Cuthbert Blackett?
DESCRIPTION:Image credit: The North of England Institute of Mining and Mechanical Engineers \n\n\n\nWilliam Cuthbert Blackett dominated the life of Sacriston in the early 20th century. Who was he?\n\n\n\nBlackett was Managing Director of the Charlaw and Sacriston Colliery Co. Ltd. But he was much more than this. An innovator in mining engineering and mines rescue\, a soldier\, a prominent supporter of local causes\, he was often at odds with his workers but retained their respect. Above all\, Blackett was a highly courageous man who on several occasions risked his own life to rescue miners trapped underground and was awarded medals for his bravery. This lecture will tell the story of a local hero. And\, have you ever wondered why the road marked Acorn Close Lane on Google Maps is known locally as Blackett’s Bank? This lecture will tell you why. \n\n\n\nJohn Tomaney is a Pro-Provost and Professor of Urban and Regional Planning at University College London and chair of the Trustees at Redhills. He has strong family connections with Sacriston and has been  researching its history for several years. This lecture follows one he gave last year when he sketched the early history of the village. \n\n\n\nThis event is sponsored by Redhills – the Durham Miners’ Hall and University College London. A bar will be open.Free light refreshments will be available. \n\n\n\nDuration: 1 hr 30 min
