DESCRIPTION:Durham Free Fringe aims to offer performance spots to all who apply\, which has been made possible by the addition of two venues. Redhills Durham Miners Hall will be the hub for the many spoken word acts taking part. Meanwhile\, The Market Tavern joins The Holy GrAle as a second pub-based venue\, and these spaces will host the majority of music events. The Holy GrAle and Market Tavern will begin hosting events on Wednesday 29th and Thursday 30th July\, Redhills will then run from Friday 31st July to Sunday 2nd August. The Sunday will also feature a music finale at the Holy GrAle. \nThe line up for 2nd August is: \n  \nWords on a North East Street presented by Dan Husband\nAndrew Mears has led a call for 100 poets from the NE to produce a book of 100 poems about homelessness.  This has helped support homelessness charities all over the North East and is growing into community led talks\, fundraisers and awareness meetings. From 3.00 p.m. \n  \nDomesticon.\nAn experimental solo spoken word & comedy performance unpacking lived (and dead) experience of domesticity\, consumerism\, grief\, mothers (mams)\, relationships\, supermarkets\, education\, and health through performative poetic outputs. Trigger warnings: grief\, death and Tesco. 3.30 p.m. (60 min) \n  \nMwelwa Chilekwa: ReSIStance\nWomen are the villains and society is the judge\, jury and executioner. Our heads lay bare on the guillotine and with one false move… But this show changes our story and empowers others. A passionate and emotive one-woman show featuring poetry to SMASH the patriarchy. From light-hearted topics like school life and dating to the more darker aspects: abuse and sexual assault. Trigger warning for those topics\, this is how the world is. Experiences far too many women and girls\, myself included\, face. Why? Together\, no matter your gender\, we are going to put the sis in resistance! 4.35 p.m. (60 min) \n  \nAnne-Marie Draycott: The Good Girl is Revolting\nShe was taught to stay quiet & small. Not anymore. A sharp\, funny spoken word show about women taking up space and reclaiming their voice. Raised to keep the peace\, Anne-Marie learned early that staying small meant staying safe – but at what cost? Through honest and at times light-hearted spoken word\, she draws on her experience of growing up around domestic violence and unpicks the invisible rules that teach girls and women to be polite\, quiet and accommodating. But no more. The “good girl” is revolting. 6.00 p.m. (45 min) \n  \nGeorgia Goodson: Terrible Beautiful Things\nGeorgia builds a set around her latest publication\, with bits and pieces thrown in from the previous\, as well as some unpublished work that is building for a potential future release. Big themes of grief\, nature\, loss\, love. 6.50 p.m (20 min) \n  \nStories from the Streets: Dan Husband\n‘Stories from the Streets’ strays away from the one hour show to be broken down across a weekend\, whilst allowing other spoken word talent and opportunity to showcase their style alongside me! Think less all my ramblings\, think more ‘Husband Material presents:’ D.L. ‘Dan’ Husband is a North East England born & bred writer\, poet and performer. With two collections (HMVI & HMV II) published alongside a score of individual pieces in various publications\, he pens poetry and prose with acid in the inkwell & compassion in the heart. Unflinching writing and performances at various venues and Fringe festivals discussing addiction\, homelessness\, life\, love\, growth and all that lies in between. He has also featured on BBC upload ‘best of 2025’ show and the Northern Voices podcast. “He’s absolutely FAB”  (Emma Millen\, BBC UPLOAD) Guests: Gary the Hat\, Gaeran Southern\, Kev Robson\, Adam Berkeley 7.15 p.m. (30 mins) \n  \nStories from the Streets: Brogan Brannan\nBorn in Somerset\, raised in Scotland\, sullying the north east for the past 6 years\, Brogan is a spoken word poet and performer with salty rants\, structured rhymes and no reservations. Her work often illuminates how deeply personal experiences are often universally felt and she doesn’t shy away from the grisly details. Grab her anytime she’s not on stage to buy a QR code to download her audio album and take some pieces of her home! 8.00 p.m. (30 mins) \n  \nKeith Ford\nKeith Ford is responsible for: 6% of the musical talent in Mr Ford and Mr Gibbs; 11% of the beauty and brains in Mr Ford and Mrs Ford; 3% of the inherent hiphoprisy in Geordie Genes; 49% of the cheerfulness in DJ Cheap and Cheerful; 17.3% of Speech Therapy’s hosting history; 0.2% of his own browsing history. I’m OK is a series of photographs and words from North East photographer and storyteller\, Richard Eyers and the people that he meets. The words are their own; what they have chosen to share. They are unedited. Each portrait is inspired by conversation and the words that have been shared. Exhibition in the Miners’ Hall cinema room\, with talks at points through the day. From 3.00 p.m. \n  \nErasmus Croc’s and Aaron Wright’s Guide To Life\nErasmus Croc is the world’s first poetry crocodile\, performing alongside his young protégé\, Aaron Wright. Together they present their guide to life\, the universe and everything through spoken word\, poetry\, low-tech props and bubbles. Expect tales of possessed tumble dryers\, blinged-up slugs and other surreal wonders. Soak in sumptuous visuals and audacious auditory skills as a crocodilian delivers rhythm and rhyme\, aided and abetted by his star pupil. A playful\, poetic\, and joyfully strange Fringe experience. 3.25 p.m. (45 min) \n  \nJohn Hobson: Funny Onion\nA standup comedy performance poetry show featuring poems about vegetables as well as Rebecker the double decker\, a useless football referee and a stovepipe hat. Funny Onion made its debut earlier this year in Sheffield to a sell-out audience and has played at multiple venues at the Buxton Festival Fringe during July. 4.15 p.m. (60 mins) \n  \nLEDGE: Principles of the Mind\nWhat if the impossible was just a matter of belief? Join psychological entertainer Ledge as he demonstrates the hidden powers of YOUR mind through stunning mentalism. SUMMARY:COLPITTS POETRY LIVE: Steve Urwin and Tony Gadd
DESCRIPTION:Colpitts Poetry Live continues its new season at Redhills Miners Hall with a featured double bill from two of the North East’s most distinctive working class poetry voices: Steve Urwin and Tony Gadd. \nSteve Urwin is a poet\, performer\, writing facilitator and multiple poetry slam champion. His work has appeared in magazines including Fire\, King Ink\, Open Wide\, Smiths Knoll and Tears in the Fence. In 2023 he undertook the remarkable challenge of writing and self-publishing a new pamphlet every month. His latest collection from Red Squirrel Press is Laughter to Split Glass\, with a new full-length collection due in 2027. Steve also runs Talking Pen and organises the popular monthly Poetry Jam at Durham’s Waddington Street Centre. \nTony Gadd has enjoyed an interesting and varied career as a performer and poet. Through poetry he explores the experiences\, thoughts and feelings of everyday existence — open\, honest and unafraid to say what others avoid. He has performed everywhere from cafés to cathedrals\, shipping containers to museums\, The Glasshouse to the BBC Edinburgh Fringe Slam and festival stages across the country. Along the way he has supported major names\, hosted his own poetry nights\, undertaken commissions and completed a year-long residency for the Norman Cornish Centenary Celebrations. DESCRIPTION:Colpitts Poetry Live continues its new season at Redhills Miners Hall\, Durham on Tuesday 26 May\, building on a 50-year tradition of live literature in the city with a special double-feature evening\, 7pm – 9.30pm. \nThe night opens with a 20-minute set from Gateshead-based performance poet Jenni Pascoe\, known for her playful and unpredictable style\, where humour\, poignancy and the occasional political edge collide. A seasoned live performer\, she has won poetry slams\, appeared as a Poetry Chef with The Poetry Takeaway\, and founded the critically acclaimed spoken word cabaret JibbaJabba. \nThis is followed by a 50-minute Stop Write Hear (SWH) Magazine takeover\, led by Darlington-based writers Ann Cuthbert and Pam Plumb\, presenting a curated showcase drawn from their vibrant local scene. \nAnn Cuthbert’s work has been widely published\, most recently in Mugwort Magazine and the Crossing the Tees anthology (Sixth Element\, 2026)\, and she was co-poet-in-residence for MIMA’s 2025 Secret Lives of the Bottle of Notes exhibition. \nPam Plumb is a crime writer shortlisted for the Northern Writers’ Award (2025)\, with recent work appearing in Guilty Secrets (CWA\, 2026). \nTogether they run Stop Write Hear\, a popular monthly writers’ sharing event in Darlington\, and edit SWH Magazine\, showcasing writers from across a 30-mile radius of the town. \nThere will also be an open mic for poems and original songs\, with a limited number of slots available. DESCRIPTION:Voices from the Coalfield: Marking the 100th Anniversary of the General Strike \nWith special guest Tom Kelly. \nJoin us at Redhills Durham Miners Hall for a special afternoon of poetry\, storytelling and live performance as we mark the centenary of the 1926 General Strike. \nThis celebratory event is the culmination of a four-week creative writing course led by Writer in Residence Andy Willoughby\, bringing together original work shaped by the stories\, histories and lived experiences of coalfield communities. \nThrough poetry\, short fiction and dramatic monologue\, participants will share newly created pieces inspired by personal memory\, family history and the rich social heritage of County Durham — fresh contemporary voices in dialogue with the past. \nWe are delighted to welcome special guest Tom Kelly\, whose work has long given voice to the region’s people\, places and struggles. \nThere will also be a limited open mic for poems and songs inspired by County Durham history\, mining heritage and traditions of struggle. \nSet within the historic surroundings of Redhills this event continues the building’s long tradition as a place of gathering\, expression and community voice. DESCRIPTION:Two stunning stage presences from the North East!\nJulie Egdell is an acclaimed poet and performer from Whitley Bay\, renowned for her fierce lyric intelligence\, emotional candour and hypnotic stage presence. Her multimedia spoken-word show and book (Smokestack 2017) Alice in Winterland re-imagines Alice through the lens of an unruly old Soviet cartoon character\, shifting between her native Tyneside and St Petersburg where she taught English. \nThe show shifts kaleidoscopically\, mashing up poetry\, storytelling\, live performance\, film and a specially composed musical sountrack\, moving between surreal dark humour and raw intimacy to examine displacement\, identity\, cultural exile and personal memory. Alice in Winterland is bold\, haunting and unforgettable. \nAndy Willoughby is an internationally recognised poet\, playwright and producer from the North East of England\, acclaimed for his tender lyricism\, tough humour and magnetic performance style. His spoken-word show Between Stations (book: Smokestack 2016) juxtaposes a short train journey across Teesside on a post-cancer-surgery winter day with memories of an epic\, chaotic journey deep into Siberia with Finnish poets. \nBlending poetry from the book\, storytelling\, live performance\, film by Dan Perry and an original music soundtrack by Masi Hukari and Anton Flint\, the show constantly switches tracks between bleak comedy and aching tenderness\, exploring post-industrial reality\, love\, survival\, and working-class and personal history in a post-Beat travelogue – a wild ride through space and time. \nOpen Mic – There will also be a limited open mic slot with the theme of Travel to echo Julie and Andy’s poetry. DESCRIPTION:Colpitts Poetry is fifty\, and to mark the occasion we’re staging a novel and exciting relaunch event at Durham Miners Hall. This will take the form of a ‘retrospective’ and fundraiser\, in which a number of our committee members past and present will read poems by a sample of the 440-plus readers who have performed at Colpitts between its foundation in 1975 and 2017 when we held our last regular reading. From Fleur Adcock to Harry Zevenbergen\, Gillian Allnutt to Derek Walcott\, we’ve presented a vast range of different poetries over the course of our existence\, and this evening offers a chance to hear what should be a fascinating cross-section of this work. \nThere’ll be a bar\, with tea and coffee also available\, and the venue is fully accessible.
